White Rhinoceros

I took this photo of a white rhinoceros at the Brevard Zoo. They're not actually white, but are grey or yellowish in color. This one had just climbed out of a mud hole.

  • The term "white" is the english holdover of the dutch word "vyt", meaning wide or broad. This rhino has a broad, flat lip suited to a diet of grass. The "black rhino has a narrow, prehensile lip that allows it to pluck leaves and berries from trees and thorny bushes
